I had a similar conversation with an atheist recently. Like Matt, at the bottom their atheism is founded in a flawed individualist superficial materialism: “if I dont see it, it can’t exist or be true for anyone else”. Or “you have to prove things the way I particularly understand them”. I always rebut this weak logic saying: “I have never been to China, so I suppose China doesn’t exist under your logic”.

Trent: I really do think you are one of the most outstanding defenders of the faith out there today. At the same time, we need to stick closely to the Catechism and her language lest Catholics mix what the Church teaches with the myriad of non-Catholic end times "schemes" out there. You indicated that Catholics believe in "the tribulation" at 5:45 and used this term extensively throughout the video. This is very misleading and should be clarified. If Catholics walk around saying to non-Catholic Christians that we believe in "the tribulation," no one has any context for what we are speaking about. It is EASILY confused with the term "THE Great Tribulation" used by those who treat Mt 24 as a "playbook" prophecy about the end of the world, drawing in a lot of non-biblical beliefs which (like the Rapture) that are incompatible with the Catholic faith. Search for the term "tribulation" in the Catechism and you'll find it's NEVER used with respect to the final days of the Church. She uses the term "Final Trial," or "Ultimate Trial" (referring to final), and I believe this is not unintentional. We as Catholics who wish to represent our faith should standardize on it, and we should know what the Church teaches about such terms. There are arguably 3 references in the NT that refer to "great tribulation" (Mk 13,19; Mt 24,21; Rev 7,14) and, as you probably know, many if not the majority of the early church regarded MK 13,19, and Mt 24,21 as fulfilled in Jerusalem's destruction in 70 AD. For example, Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) treats the Mark and Matthew verses about the great tribulation just cited as referring to Jerusalem in 70 AD in his book "Eschatology." The only formal reference to "the great tribulation" in the Catechism occurs in a section on prayer and refers to "the great tribulation" from Revelation as a PAST event, not a future one coming upon the world: CCC 2642: "The Revelation of 'what must soon take place,' the Apocalypse, is borne along by the songs of the heavenly liturgy but also by the intercession of the “witnesses” (martyrs). The prophets and the saints, all those who were slain on earth for their witness to Jesus, the vast throng of those who, HAVING COME THROUGH the great tribulation, have gone BEFORE US into the Kingdom." (caps mine). That's not to say their won't be "tribulation" (or better translated IMO for modern English speakers from the Greek thlipsis as "great distress" or "great anxiety") in the final days as you correctly represent, but that's not the same meaning as potentially the majority of bible Christians in the US ascribe to the great tribulation. The only theological "need" for a "rapture" is to create a "pre-tribulation" scenario for Christians to experience a free non-suffering parachute ride out of the supposed inevitable living hell called "the great tribulation" that God supposedly wills to be unleashed upon the world. It's a very different understanding than how the Catechism elegantly puts it. Thanks for all you do for us. JMJ.

A religion is a set of ideas that a person adopts - it is not the same as skin color or gender or sexual orientation. The ideas and actions of the Catholic church CAN and SHOULD be criticized and challenged - they are just ideas and bad ones at that

Mike Winger says he asked a priest (after a wedding, so, the priest is just hanging out at that point) "Why did you become a priest?" At 49:27, he claims that the priest said "Huh, I never thought about that". Really? And Mike Winger didn't see the twinkle in his eye? Like, the priest had probably never been asked that a million times before? Like, that's not part of the discernment process for becoming a priest? Really? Mike Winger just accepted that answer? What was the point of his asking the question? So that he could invent a back story for this priest?

Like John Calvin, Thomas Aquinas did not believe that God desired the salvation of all men, and both Calvin and Aquinas affirmed the Lombardian Formula: Christ died for all sufficiently, and for the elect efficiently. The Heidelberg Catechism, a widely used Reformed catechism, says that Christ “bore, in body and soul, the wrath of God against the sin of the whole human race.” John Davenant, representing the Church of England at the Synod of Dort, affirmed the Lombardian Formula and taught what we call today Hypothetical Universalism. It is unfortunate that the more Owenian Limited Atonement became popular while Davenant's Hypothetical Universalism fell into obscurity, and many Reformed scholastics modified the Lombardian Formula, but you can certainly be Reformed and affirm the Lombardian Formula. I, as a Reformed Christian, can genuinely, without reserve or falsehood, tell someone that Christ died for them.

“The church should be a place where everyone is welcomed, AND ENCOURAGED TO SEEK HOLINESS.” That second part is what a lot of progressive Christians (if you can even call them that) miss out on. They fundamentally miss the one of the big points of the church. You don’t go to church to be “accepted” You go to Worship GOD and encourage one another to be holier. And to transform yourself and your life and ideas about life.

I'm sure we have had saints who struggled with attraction to the same sex and did not engage in the sin, and were possibly even sanctified by their struggle. Does anyone know if we have any recorded history of saints with this struggle? I think we need one badly, someone for people struggling with this to look to. If we can have a saint of bowl problems, we SHOULD have a patron of people struggling with homosexuality, one whose life is marked by the struggle who perseveres in obedience to God. One who is redeemed and rejects it for love of God. I know there is Seraphim Rose in the Eastern Orthodox Church, he was in a homosexual relationship and ended up leaving it as he grew in his faith.

    1. Allen Parr seems to fear unabsolved sin. 2. Purgatory is found in 1st century Jewish Midrashim, as well as in 2nd Temple era apocrypha (such as “The Apocalypse of Zephaniah”). It is also found in early Iranian Avesta - as being a place where a middle class of sinners go (who were not internally wicked) to have their lesser sins detached.

I think arguments regarding human biology surrounding the binarys and biological lack of evidence for transgender people miss the point. Regardless that circumstance, people have the liberty to seek being whatever gender they see themselves as, regardless of their biology. And on the topic of naturality of sexual interaction, I also see it to be irrelevant, at least for legislation. The focus should instead be by the lack of harm to others. Which means consent with full awareness of consequences for living beings (no children, no animals) and for nonliving things (people often have attractions to such things) they must be your own property (not someone elses things)

No, those dogmas do not "contradict Scripture". Nor would it matter in the slightest if they did; as the NT contradicts the OT, and each Testament contradicts itself. There is no *Biblical* basis for supposing that total freedom from all contradiction within its parts or of them is necessary for the Bible: the notion that there is a such a necessity, is an unexamined assumption from outside the Bible that has been projected onto it. It is high time for this unexamined assumption to be tested and scrutinised, rather than tamely assented to as though it were a self-evident truth. Even on the supposition - an invalid one; but let us, for the sake of argument, suppose it to be valid -.that the "Marian dogmas" (a bad name for them, BTW) do "contradict Scripture", what if they do ? Exactly the same objection is made, by some Protestants or quasi-Protestants, against dogmas that many or most Protestants agree with Catholicism in holding as true: such as that of the Most Holy Trinity, or that of the immortality of the human soul, or that of eternal punishment, or that of original sin, or that of the necessity of Baptism. If Protestants, all reading the very same Bibles, cannot agree among themselves that those are all truths that do not "contradict Scripture" - why should Catholics be impressed by the fact that Protestants object that some dogmas held by Catholicism, but not by all Protestants, "contradict Scripture" ? All doctrinal truth is not to be found in Scripture alone; it is all to be found in Christ, but it is not all to be found in the Bible. Some people gaze "too fixedly" at Scripture, so that they miss, not only Christ to Whom it witnesses, but also the consequences of Who & What He is. The Pharisees made that mistake, and the result was, that they "killed and crucified" the Messiah. God cannot be limited to a set of books, no matter how fully "God-breathed", just as God could not be limited to the Ark of the Covenant or to the Jerusalem Temple. Protestants contradict their own doctrine that nothing is to be taught as Christian doctrine except what is in the Bible or can be derived therefrom, when they accept as "God-breathed" Holy Scripture the 27 named books of the New Testament, complete with all their parts; for there is no *Biblical* foundation for any such Christian books to be reckoned as Holy Scripture. The very people who say that Catholicism holds as true dogmas that "contradict Scripture", themselves contradict their own doctrine,, when they require Christians to hold as true several doctrines about those 27 books for which there is no foundation in the Bible. Protestants should decide among themselves what they believe God has revealed as needing to be believed, before they think of criticising Catholicism for not believing all and only the doctrines that they believe. To alter slightly a familiar (and very relevant) Biblical saying: "Physicians, heal yourselves". It is impossible to take seriously Protestant objections that Catholicism "contradict[s] Scripture", when they cannot agree among themselves on matters of doctrine, even though these doctrines are, supposedly, derived from & based upon Scripture. The Protestant failure to agree on such matters gives the lie to the Protestant doctrine of the perspicuity of Scripture: and their doctrine of private judgement is a recipe for doctrinal chaos.

Wow. You two guys slapped this fellow from Baptist land around pretty bad here. You might want to buy him a nice cup of coffee. The fact of this is, I don’t know any Catholics who think anything lives in images, it seems to be limited to Prots to be fearful of their adherents falling into the belief that there is something more in pictures and statues than paint and plaster. These things are pavers on the road to that which is Holy that our minds can use to reach that power that we wish to focus on. It is not “it” we “worship” or “venerate” it is the power of which it is a symbol of. Even God uses some of this manner of thing to get our attention from time to time as in crying Holy Mother and so forth. Jesus being a God incarnate is in fact a reason to see some of the idol prohibitions (which were intended to stop God’s people from falling into practices found in Paganism) are somewhat less important to secure the worship of the faithful to the rightful God in these times.

To think that Christians, Catholic or anyone else is “worshipping” a thing is pretty silly and infantile. To have a focus that provides a path upon which to lay our thoughts along pavers leading to that which we do worship is not “worship” of a thing. These guys making this claim are irresponsible and they are bearing a false witness. They are concluding upon that which they do not understand that others that they also do not understand are committing a sin and they are announcing that to others who don’t have the ability to understand what those being accused of are doing.
